This majestic and awe-inspiring painting is structured upon Zhang Daqian’s “Mount Lu” (1899-1983).
Billowing mist weaves through the peaks, revealing and concealing the mountain ridges. The terrain plunges steeply into a deep valley, where cascading waterfalls give rise to swirling mist.
Lush forests grow between the rocks, and a secluded mountain lodge at the center conveys a sense of quiet distance—expressing the artist’s longing for the landscape and reverence for nature.
Upon closer inspection, however, towering skyscrapers emerge from the dense forests, alongside massive deity statues, clusters of corrugated metal shacks, and even a distant Ferris wheel.
The scene is filled with a striking juxtaposition of ancient and modern elements—inviting irony and reflection.
Can nature still accommodate human construction?
And can modern civilization truly respond to the calling of the mountains and valleys?
The work prompts viewers to contemplate the possibility of coexistence between humanity and the earth, and to consider the scale and place of civilization in the face of eternal landscapes.
